Service overview
Bathroom Renovations in Southend-on-Sea: what's involved.
What it is
A full bathroom renovation means taking the room back to a blank shell and rebuilding it: removing old fittings, reworking pipework, preparing walls and floors, tiling, installing the new suite and finishing with decoration. PCR handles every one of those stages and coordinates the specialist trades, so you aren't left chasing a plumber, a tiler and a plasterer separately.
Who it's for
Homeowners in Southend and across Essex who want a new bathroom without project-managing it themselves. That includes people updating a tired room, landlords preparing a property, and anyone who has been let down by poor previous workmanship and wants it put right.
When you need it
Usually when the suite is dated, the shower leaks or underperforms, grout and sealant keep failing, there are signs of damp or mould, or the layout simply doesn't suit how you live. It's also the right time when you're selling or have just bought a property and want the bathroom done before you settle in.
Why professional help matters
A bathroom combines water, waste, electrics, waterproofing and finishing in a small space. Each trade relies on the one before it. When those steps aren't sequenced and checked, problems appear later behind tiles where they are expensive to reach. One person overseeing the whole job removes those gaps.
The cost of waiting
What happens if it's left, or done badly.
Small issues in bathrooms rarely stay small. A failing seal around a shower tray lets water track under the floor; a slow leak behind a wall softens plasterboard and rots timber joists. By the time you see staining on a ceiling below, the repair has grown from a reseal into lifting floors and replacing boards.
Risks that escalate
- Water damage to ceilings, joists and the rooms below
- Mould growth from poor ventilation and failed sealant
- Loose or cracked tiles caused by inadequate preparation
- Low water pressure or poor drainage from badly planned pipework
- Paying twice when a cheap job has to be stripped out and redone
Common mistakes we see
- Tiling over old, unsound surfaces instead of preparing them properly
- Skipping waterproofing in wet areas around showers and baths
- Choosing fittings before checking pipe routes and water pressure
- Hiring separate trades with nobody responsible for the overall result
- Comparing quotes that don't list the same scope of work

In detail
Materials, methods and the work we cover.
Every bathroom is different, so the specification is agreed with you at the site visit. These are the materials, methods and variations we commonly work with.
How we do it
We start by removing the existing room back to sound surfaces. Pipework is rerouted where the new layout needs it, and walls in wet areas are boarded and waterproofed before tiling. Floors are levelled so large tiles sit flat. Fittings are installed and tested, joints are sealed, and the room is decorated. Where electrical work needs certification, it's carried out by qualified electricians; any gas work is done by Gas Safe registered engineers arranged by PCR.
Materials we work with
- Porcelain and ceramic wall and floor tiles, including large-format
- Shower trays, enclosures and walk-in glass screens
- Freestanding, back-to-wall and standard baths
- Vanity units, wall-hung and close-coupled WCs
- Heated towel rails and thermostatic shower valves
- Tile backer boards and waterproofing systems for wet areas
Types of bathroom renovations
- Full bathroom renovations
- Shower room conversions and en-suites
- Shower replacement and retiling
- Bath-to-shower swaps
- Cloakroom and downstairs WC refits
Situations we're called for
- Dated or worn-out bathrooms
- Leaking showers and failed seals
- Rooms badly finished by a previous installer
- Preparing a property for sale or letting
- Adapting a layout to suit a family's routine
Planning the layout
The best bathroom layouts start from the waste. A WC needs a short, direct run to the soil stack, and a shower tray needs enough fall to drain properly. Moving either is possible, but it affects floor build-up, boxing and cost. At the site visit Jordan checks where your soil pipe, supplies and joists run, then advises on what can move easily and what is better left in place. That conversation often saves money without compromising on the room you want.
Shower or bath, or both
Walk-in showers suit busy households and look clean and modern, but they need careful waterproofing and a properly falling floor or a low-profile tray. Baths remain valuable in family homes and can matter at resale. In smaller Southend terraces and bungalows a shower-over-bath with a fixed glass screen is often the most practical answer. We'll talk through the trade-offs for your space before anything is ordered.
Getting the finish right
What makes a bathroom look expensive is rarely the tile price. It is straight lines, balanced cuts, aligned grout joints, neat silicone and fittings set at the right heights. Those details come from preparation and setting-out before the first tile goes on. It's why customers' reviews mention attention to detail and why previous poor workmanship is corrected rather than covered.
Who carries out the work
PCR is owner-led. Jordan Thomas manages every project personally and works on site, supported by a trusted network of electricians, plasterers, carpenters, decorators and tilers chosen to suit each job. Before founding the company, Jordan spent around nine years in mechanical engineering, specialising in plumbing and heating, and progressed into managing projects. That background shapes how work is planned: services first, surfaces prepared properly, and each stage checked before the next begins.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Southend?
Every bathroom is different, so we don't publish 'from' prices. After a site visit you receive a fixed-price quotation with the full scope set out, so you know exactly what you're paying for before anything starts.
How long does a bathroom renovation take?
It depends on the size of the room and the scope: a shower replacement is far quicker than a full rebuild with new layout. Your quote sets out what's involved, and Jordan will talk you through the expected programme at the site visit.
Do I need to deal with separate plumbers, tilers and electricians?
No. PCR manages the whole job from start to finish and arranges the specialist trades, so you deal with one company throughout.
Can you fix problems left by a previous installer?
Yes. Resolving issues caused by poor previous workmanship is a regular part of our bathroom work. We identify them at the survey and include the fix in the quote.
Can you help me choose tiles and layout?
Yes. Jordan gives practical advice on design, fittings and layout, based on what will work with your pipework, space and budget.
How quickly will I get a quote?
Usually within 2–3 working days of the site visit. Larger or more complex projects can take slightly longer because we price every element properly rather than guessing.
Are you insured?
Yes. PCR holds public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
