Service overview

Plastering in Southend-on-Sea: what's involved.

What it is

Plastering covers skimming walls and ceilings, patch repairs, boarding stud walls and ceilings, and making good after electrical, plumbing or alteration work.

Who it's for

Homeowners with cracked, uneven or damaged walls, anyone renovating or altering rooms, and people preparing walls for decorating.

When you need it

When plaster is cracked, blown or uneven, after rewiring or replumbing, when old textured ceilings need covering, or when new walls have gone up.

Why professional help matters

Every flaw in plaster shows through paint. Blown plaster also continues to deteriorate. A good skim gives a flat, durable surface that makes the decorating last.

The cost of waiting

What happens if it's left, or done badly.

Cracks widen, blown plaster detaches and patched areas show through paint. Decorating over poor plaster wastes money because the finish never looks right.

Risks that escalate

  • Plaster detaching from walls
  • Visible cracks returning
  • Uneven finish ruining decoration
  • Damp issues hidden behind patches
  • Redoing decorating after plaster fails

Common mistakes we see

  • Painting over blown or cracked plaster
  • Not sealing surfaces before skimming
  • Decorating new plaster before it's dry
  • Patching instead of addressing the cause
  • Leaving plastering until after decorating starts

In detail

Materials, methods and the work we cover.

Plastering work includes:

How we do it

Loose and blown plaster is removed, surfaces sealed, and deep areas built up with bonding. Walls and ceilings are skimmed in two coats to a smooth finish. New stud walls and ceilings are boarded and taped before skimming.

Materials we work with

  • Multi-finish skim plaster
  • Bonding coat for deep repairs
  • Plasterboard and moisture-resistant boards
  • PVA and bonding primers
  • Angle beads and scrim tape

Types of plastering

  • Full room skims
  • Ceiling skimming
  • Patch repairs
  • Boarding new walls and ceilings
  • Making good after rewiring or plumbing

Situations we're called for

  • Cracked or uneven walls
  • Covering textured ceilings
  • Post-alteration finishing
  • Renovation projects
  • Preparing for decoration

Skim or patch?

Small cracks and holes can be patched, but patches often show through paint on large walls. Where plaster is cracked in several places or uneven overall, a full skim gives a consistent, smooth surface. We'll recommend the approach that gives the best finish for the budget.

Blown plaster

Plaster that sounds hollow when tapped has lost its bond to the wall. It will continue to crack and eventually come away. It needs removing back to sound material and rebuilding before skimming, not filling over.

Drying before decorating

New plaster must dry fully before painting, and the first coat should be a mist coat to let it absorb properly. Painting too soon or with the wrong product can cause peeling. If decorating is part of your job, we time it correctly.

Who carries out the work

PCR is owner-led. Jordan Thomas manages every project personally and works on site, supported by a trusted network of electricians, plasterers, carpenters, decorators and tilers chosen to suit each job. Before founding the company, Jordan spent around nine years in mechanical engineering, specialising in plumbing and heating, and progressed into managing projects. That background shapes how work is planned: services first, surfaces prepared properly, and each stage checked before the next begins.
