Service overview
Painting & Decorating in Southend-on-Sea: what's involved.
What it is
Painting and decorating covers preparing and finishing walls, ceilings, woodwork, doors and skirting. The quality of a paint job is decided mostly before the first coat: filling, sanding, priming and making good.
Who it's for
Homeowners refreshing rooms, people finishing a renovation, landlords between tenancies, and anyone whose previous decoration was done badly and needs correcting.
When you need it
When paint is tired or marked, after plastering or alterations, before selling or letting, or when previous decorating has left patchy coverage, drips or poor cutting-in.
Why professional help matters
Paint highlights every flaw underneath it. Cracks, dents and flaking areas show through if they aren't dealt with. Proper preparation is what separates a finish that lasts from one that needs redoing.
The cost of waiting
What happens if it's left, or done badly.
Tired decoration makes a home feel neglected and can hide problems like damp or cracking. Poor previous work, such as paint over flaking surfaces, continues to peel and gets harder to correct over time.
Risks that escalate
- Peeling paint over unprepared surfaces
- Damp patches masked rather than addressed
- Visible patching and uneven sheen
- Lower appeal to buyers and tenants
- Paying again to strip and redo poor work
Common mistakes we see
- Painting over flaking or glossy surfaces without preparation
- Skipping mist coats on new plaster
- Using the wrong paint for kitchens and bathrooms
- Rushing cutting-in and edges
- Decorating before other works are complete

Interior decorating work we take on includes:
How we do it
Rooms are protected first. Surfaces are washed where needed, cracks and holes filled, and areas sanded smooth. Bare plaster gets a mist coat, stains are sealed, and woodwork is keyed before top coats. Finishes are applied in even coats with careful cutting-in.
Materials we work with
- Matt, silk and durable washable emulsions
- Satinwood and gloss for woodwork
- Mist coats for new plaster
- Stain-block and primers
- Flexible fillers and caulk
- Moisture-resistant paints for kitchens and bathrooms
Types of painting & decorating
- Single room refreshes
- Whole-house decorating
- Woodwork, doors and skirting
- Ceilings and stairwells
- Post-renovation decorating
- Rental property turnarounds
Situations we're called for
- Badly decorated rooms needing correction
- Newly plastered walls
- Pre-sale presentation
- Between tenancies
- Bungalows and family homes
Why preparation takes the time
On most decorating jobs, preparation takes longer than painting. Filling, sanding, sealing stains, priming bare timber and mist-coating new plaster are what make the top coat look smooth and stay looking good. Skipping them is how poor finishes happen, and correcting a badly decorated room means doing that preparation anyway.
Choosing the right finish
Matt emulsions hide imperfections and look modern; washable and durable mattes suit hallways and family rooms; moisture-resistant products suit kitchens and bathrooms. Satinwood gives woodwork a low-sheen finish that resists yellowing better than traditional gloss. We'll advise on the right product for each surface.
Decorating as part of a renovation
Decorating comes last, after plastering, carpentry and flooring trims. Booking it with PCR as part of a wider project means it's timed properly and nothing is damaged by trades still working, saving you from paying for touch-ups.
Who carries out the work
PCR is owner-led. Jordan Thomas manages every project personally and works on site, supported by a trusted network of electricians, plasterers, carpenters, decorators and tilers chosen to suit each job. Before founding the company, Jordan spent around nine years in mechanical engineering, specialising in plumbing and heating, and progressed into managing projects. That background shapes how work is planned: services first, surfaces prepared properly, and each stage checked before the next begins.

How much does decorating cost?
Larger decorating projects are priced on a fixed-quote basis after a visit. Smaller touch-up jobs can be done at our maintenance rate: £80 including the first hour, then £50 per hour plus materials.
How long will it take to decorate a room?
It depends on the condition of the surfaces and how much preparation is needed. We'll explain this when we quote.
Do you move furniture and protect floors?
Yes. Floors and furniture are protected before work begins and the room is cleaned at the end.
Can you fix a previous poor paint job?
Yes. We've corrected badly decorated homes, including a bungalow where the previous renovation had been poorly finished.
Do you supply the paint?
We can supply trade-quality paint or use products you've chosen. It's agreed in the quote.
How quickly will I get a quote?
Usually within 2–3 working days of the site visit. Larger or more complex projects can take slightly longer because we price every element properly rather than guessing.
Are you insured?
Yes. PCR holds public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
