Service overview

Tiling in Southend-on-Sea: what's involved.

What it is

Tiling covers walls and floors in bathrooms, showers, kitchens and hallways, from splashbacks to large-format porcelain floors. The visible tile is only the last layer; substrate, waterproofing, adhesive and levelling decide whether it lasts.

Who it's for

Homeowners renovating a bathroom or kitchen, those replacing cracked or loose tiles, and anyone retiling a shower area that has started to leak.

When you need it

When tiles are cracked, loose or hollow-sounding, grout is failing, a shower has started leaking, or you're renovating and want a new look.

Why professional help matters

Tiles laid on poor surfaces crack and lift. In wet areas, missing waterproofing lets water reach plasterboard and timber. Professional preparation and setting-out prevent both, and give a straight, even finish.

The cost of waiting

What happens if it's left, or done badly.

Cracked tiles and failed grout let water behind the surface. In showers, that can mean rotting boards and damage to rooms below. Hollow tiles will eventually come away.

Risks that escalate

  • Water behind tiles damaging walls and floors
  • Mould along grout lines
  • Loose tiles detaching
  • Cracks caused by movement in an unprepared floor
  • Re-tiling cost after a poor first job

Common mistakes we see

  • Tiling directly onto unsound plaster in showers
  • No waterproofing in wet zones
  • Uneven floors under large-format tiles
  • Poor setting-out leaving thin cuts at edges
  • Wrong adhesive for the tile or substrate

In detail

Materials, methods and the work we cover.

We tile with a wide range of materials and formats.

How we do it

Old tiles are removed and surfaces checked. Wet areas are boarded and tanked, floors levelled where needed, and the layout set out to avoid thin cuts. Tiles are fixed with suitable adhesive, grouted and finished with flexible sealant at movement joints.

Materials we work with

  • Porcelain tiles, including large-format
  • Ceramic wall tiles
  • Natural-stone-effect tiles
  • Mosaics and feature tiles
  • Tile backer boards
  • Tanking and waterproofing systems

Types of tiling

  • Bathroom walls and floors
  • Shower enclosures and wet areas
  • Kitchen splashbacks
  • Hallway and kitchen floors
  • Shower retiling

Situations we're called for

  • Leaking showers
  • Cracked or loose tiles
  • Bathroom and kitchen renovations
  • Updating dated tiling
  • Correcting poor previous tiling

Choosing tiles that suit the room

Porcelain is dense, hard-wearing and suitable for floors and wet areas. Ceramic is lighter and ideal for walls. Large-format tiles mean fewer grout lines but need very flat surfaces. Textured or matt finishes give better grip underfoot in bathrooms. We'll advise on what suits your room and how it affects preparation.

Waterproofing in showers

Grout and tiles are not waterproof on their own. In showers and around baths, walls should be boarded with suitable backer board and tanked before tiling, especially on stud walls. It's the step most often missed in poor installations and the main reason showers start leaking.

Setting-out for a balanced finish

Good tiling is planned before the first tile goes on. Setting out from the centre of a wall or a focal point avoids thin slivers at corners and around windows, and lining up joints with niches and fittings gives a considered look.

Who carries out the work

PCR is owner-led. Jordan Thomas manages every project personally and works on site, supported by a trusted network of electricians, plasterers, carpenters, decorators and tilers chosen to suit each job. Before founding the company, Jordan spent around nine years in mechanical engineering, specialising in plumbing and heating, and progressed into managing projects. That background shapes how work is planned: services first, surfaces prepared properly, and each stage checked before the next begins.

FAQs

Tiling: your questions answered.

07791 230083
How much does tiling cost?

It depends on area, tile type and preparation needed. We provide a fixed quotation after seeing the job.

Can you retile just my shower?

Yes. Shower replacement and retiling is work we regularly carry out.

Do you tile over existing tiles?

We assess it on site, but removing old tiles and preparing properly usually gives a far more reliable result.

Can you lay large-format porcelain?

Yes. Large tiles need a very flat surface, so floors are levelled first.

How long does tiling take?

It depends on the area and preparation. We'll explain the timeline when quoting.

How quickly will I get a quote?

Usually within 2–3 working days of the site visit. Larger or more complex projects can take slightly longer because we price every element properly rather than guessing.

Are you insured?

Yes. PCR holds public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
